Poker has become a popular pastime worldwide. The game can be played for pennies at social gatherings and for thousands of dollars professionally. However, the skill needed to win at the game is considerable.
In general, each player receives a hand of cards that are dealt in a prearranged manner. A poker player may choose to play in a number of rounds, each with its own set of rules. A player is usually required to place a small ante before the cards are dealt.
A winning hand is awarded a pot. Some games have the player with the best hand take the entire pot while others split it among the winners. The “best” hand is determined by the game rules, i.e. the highest ranking card in the hand.

The three-card poker is a very popular variation of the game. The player is given three board cards and is expected to make a five card hand. The best hand in this game is a pair of jacks or higher, and the best hand in a stud game is a flush.
